Hotel Amista in Marseille: an 18th-century house reinvented in the Noailles district
In Marseille’s Noailles district, the Hotel Amista occupies an address steeped in history, just steps from the quays of the Old Port and La Canebière. Formerly Maison Saint-Louis, this 18th-century building, now a three-star hotel, has been given a new lease on life to become a contemporary Provençal house. The chosen name, Amista, means friendship in Provençal and sums up the spirit of the place, carried by the Ginto Hotels group since August.
The facade, with its sculpted lion heads, gargoyles and wrought-iron balconies, catches the eye of passersby walking through the narrow streets of Noailles and tells part of the city’s aristocratic history. Behind this project, three founders, Emmanuelle Pochat, Julien Kiefer and Brice de Puymorin, share a simple conviction: neighborhood addresses, on a human scale, have a value that large standardized establishments struggle to offer.
Design by Dorothée Delaye: Mediterranean colors, Provençal fabrics and curated finds
The hotel’s visual identity owes much to interior designer Dorothée Delaye, who created a sunlit palette of pink, sage green, orange-yellow and terracotta inspired by Marseille’s landscapes. Curated pieces found over the course of travels, antique mirrors and reimagined furniture create a setting that is both refined and lively. In the restaurant dining room, a ceramic mural by Atelier Franca depicts the Noailles district itself.
This aesthetic also draws on indiennes, printed cotton fabrics from the East that won over Europe as early as the 17th century and for a long time entered through Marseille before the city became a textile production center. The hotel’s Provençal fabrics, created to measure with Arianne Dalle, artistic director of the Elitis house, are featured in every room. Comfort relies on long-standing partners of the Ginto Hotels group: Treca mattresses, Dumas linens, fabrics dyed by Fanny Versace and welcome products from Maison Empereur.
24 cozy rooms in sunny tones, combining modern comfort and retro charm
The hotel’s 24 rooms come in Mediterranean shades, terracotta, blue-green or sunny yellow, with custom Provençal prints dressing the walls and textiles. Each has its own character, with terracotta tiles, custom wallpaper and vintage furniture. Some feature a balcony or terrace offering a soothing view over the city rooftops.
The rooms are intentionally cozy and compact, like Marseille townhouses: a choice that favors intimacy and the charm of detail over floor space, and is particularly suited to couples or solo stays. Each room is equipped with a large queen-size bed, free WiFi, a flat-screen TV, a desk, a telephone and a safe, as well as a bathroom with shower, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries.
Louison restaurant and organic breakfast: the Hotel Amista dining experience
On the ground floor, Louison restaurant pays tribute to the Saint-Louis district through a decor inspired by old apothecary counters, blending bistro atmosphere and understated refinement. The short menu, built around well-sourced ingredients, was imagined with The Small Group, a team already recognized in Marseille for other local gastronomic addresses. The cuisine focuses on generosity and sharing: reinvented salads and club sandwiches, comforting daily specials, indulgent treats and terrace aperitifs.
Breakfast, prepared with fresh organic products and specialty coffee, can be enjoyed in the restaurant, on the terrace or in the room, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on weekdays and until 11:00 a.m. on weekends. Offered as an extra rather than included in the room rate, it allows each guest to tailor their stay to their habits, without paying for a package they would not use.
