Ibis Styles Marseille Vieux Port opens its doors at 7 Cours Saint Louis, behind an old façade that gives little hint of what is happening inside. From the street, the sign remains discreet, almost shy, and it is easy to walk past without noticing it at first glance. Once the door is pushed open, the contrast is striking.

The place used to be the Hôtel Rome et Saint Pierre, transformed in late 2017 after major renovation work. The spaces have kept their Marseille character, the light still falls into the corridors as it once did, but the colors, furniture, and lines have shifted into a completely different style. On the ground floor, murals run across the walls and depict the city: its rooftops, its harbor, its light. Families often stop there, and children point to the silhouettes they recognize.

At the La Constellation bar, open at all hours of the day, you’ll meet both neighborhood regulars coming for a coffee and travelers in transit between visits. The atmosphere remains simple, unpretentious.

On the upper floors, the 52 rooms are divided into four formats, from the 13-square-meter single room to the 24-square-meter family room with three beds. Air conditioning and double glazing date from the renovation, a real comfort in summer, when the heat settles over the city for good. Facing Cours Saint Louis, the rooms pick up some of the neighborhood’s nighttime activity; light sleepers would do better to request a room at the back. The hotel also does not offer any rooms adapted for guests with reduced mobility, something to check before booking if it matters to your choice.

In the morning, breakfast is served buffet-style from 5:30 a.m. on weekdays, until 11 a.m. on weekends, convenient for early trains at Saint Charles station, a ten-minute walk away. The Old Port is five minutes away, along with everything that makes up city-center life: the terraces of La Canebière, the Noailles market and its colorful stalls, the narrow streets of Le Panier, the white line of the Mucem in the distance. The Green Key label, displayed at reception, is a reminder of careful water and energy management.

There is no on-site parking, but two public parking lots are a few minutes away, near La Bourse and Place du Général de Gaulle.

One last piece of advice, valid all year round: head to the Capucins market as soon as it opens, before the heat and the crowds. It’s a five-minute walk away, and that’s where the neighborhood tells its story best.
