We arrive at La Bastide de Patou by small streets that still smell like the village, far from the bustle of the Old Port, in the heart of Château Gombert, in Marseille’s 13th arrondissement. The building, a charming early-19th-century residence opened by Christine in spring 2024, welcomes every traveler with the discretion of those who know their home by heart.

Three bedrooms make up the guesthouse. The principle is simple: if you book only one or two, the others remain closed and empty. No one else sleeps under this roof. In the evening, the bastide is yours alone. This idea changes everything about the atmosphere of the stay.

Upstairs, the largest bedroom opens onto 22 m², a king-size bed, a private dressing room, the only television in the house, and a view over the garden. The other two bedrooms are more modest but just as well cared for: one with a desk, for those traveling with a little work in their luggage, the other more intimate, with a chest of drawers and a clothes rack. The three bedrooms share a bathroom upstairs, with a large shower and a toilet. A detail to keep in mind if the house is full, but one that has never seemed to bother regular guests. The bathroom is rarely occupied for long in the morning.

On each welcome tray, a kettle, tea, coffee, water, and a few treats await arriving guests, along with a booklet listing everything you need to know about the neighborhood and the house.

On the ground floor, a lounge with a library and board games invites you to slow down at the end of the day. The dining room, meanwhile, hosts breakfast between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.: pastries, bread, jams, fruit salad, orange juice, and, depending on the day, homemade cakes that vary with Christine’s mood.

Outside, the garden stretches out with sun loungers, a terrace, and a heated pool from mid-May to mid-September, open from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Upon request, you can also book a massage by the water, provided by Nathalie or Delphine, or an early-morning yoga session, before the heat sets in.

Château Gombert is not the Marseille of the calanques and the Old Port. It is a village within the city, a little off the beaten path, and it takes about twenty minutes by bus or metro to reach the center. Those arriving by car will appreciate the free nearby parking. Others will make arrangements, but no one seems to complain about it on the way back.

The house also calls for a bit of quiet in the evening: between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., noise is discouraged, and parties or outside guests are not welcome. A rule that fits the atmosphere of the house, designed more for rest than for celebrations.

One final tip: don’t linger too long in bed, breakfast ends promptly at 10 a.m., and the homemade cakes go quickly.
