Le Clos du Jas is located on the heights of Marseille’s 13th arrondissement, at the foot of the Étoile massif, on the Château-Gombert side, one of the city’s oldest villages. It is reached via a small side street, far from the bustle of the Old Port. Allow a good twenty minutes by car to reach the quays. You park in the enclosed courtyard and push open a gate. The noise of the city stops dead.

The garden does the rest. Olive trees, centuries-old almond trees, fig trees. Thyme, sage and rosemary climb along the stone walls. In summer, cicadas take over any conversation.

Just two rooms: Étoile and Garlaban, each with its own bathroom and private toilet. The first features blue-grey tones, linen and parquet flooring, with a view stretching as far as the massif it is named after. The second prefers plum and old rose, with a more boudoir atmosphere, facing Marseille and the Garlaban in the distance. On clear days, Notre-Dame de la Garde can be seen, tiny on the horizon.

In the morning, breakfast is served in the dining room or outside under the almond trees, depending on what the sky decides. Homemade jams, local produce. Service starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 10 a.m., just enough time to linger a little without making it a midday meal.

The hosts, Nicole and Guy, are the kind who remember a first name from one year to the next. They recommend an itinerary, refill the courtesy tray without needing to be asked, and sometimes offer, by reservation, an evening meal to enjoy on site.

The house has only two rooms. No reception open around the clock, no bar, no restaurant every night: you stay with hosts, in their home, at their pace. For two nights of peace and quiet, this is exactly what you come here for. For a tightly scheduled city break between the Old Port and Le Panier, it is better to plan on using the car or allow extra time for getting around.

At the end of the day, the terrace becomes the center of everything again. Light falls over Marseille, and cicadas give way to crickets.

One tip: if dinner is offered on arrival, take it straight away. Spaces are limited and go quickly.
