Mercure Marseille Centre Bompard La Corniche overlooks Corniche Kennedy, on the heights that separate the Old Port from the sea. You get there by a road that climbs gently, between the pines and the ochre façades of the Endoume district. Then, silence. The bourgeois house that houses the hotel retains its early 20th-century look, with its shutters and light stone, in the middle of a garden planted with trees that filter the afternoon light.

As soon as you push open the door, you quickly understand why you came all this way rather than staying in the very center. The noise of the Canebière seems far away, even though it is only three kilometers away. The Vélodrome Stadium and the Palais du Pharo can be made out in the distance, below, like a set you would look at through a half-open window.

The rooms are spread across four Provençal-style buildings, each with two floors. You choose the city side for the view over the rooftops, or the garden side for absolute calm and sometimes a balcony or patio. The furnishings remain understated, the bedding is carefully made, and a courtesy tray with a Nespresso machine awaits on the desk. In the bathroom, a walk-in shower or a bathtub depending on the category chosen.

In the morning, breakfast is served in the dining room, under a large chandelier, or on the terrace if the weather allows, buffet included, with the option of having it brought to your room for those who like to stay in bed a little longer.

On the ground floor, the Albert Café restaurant opens its shaded terrace at lunchtime and in the evening. Mediterranean cuisine focuses on fresh regional products. The bar, meanwhile, retains an English twist with its velvet armchairs, and remains open continuously throughout the day, ideal for an impromptu drink between two visits in the city.

Outside, the garden stretches to the pool, surrounded by parasols. It is open only in the good season, mainly in summer, so it is best to check the dates before booking if swimming is what motivates the stay.

To reach the Old Port or Catalans Beach, allow about fifteen minutes by car or take bus line 61 from the neighborhood stop. On foot, the descent to the sea takes about ten minutes via the Corniche, while the climb back up requires a bit more breath, the logical trade-off for such a peaceful location.

A tip: book a table on the terrace for dinner around 7:30 p.m., before the sun disappears behind the pine trees in the garden.
